How did you first start rapping?

I was probably 17, I was locked up for felony drug charges for about a year and had a lot of time to put my life into music. I really didn’t start taking music serious until about a year ago though, I got tired of the other game so I stepped in this one.

Who were your main influences when you were first starting doing music?

 Noreaga, LOX, State Property

Who do you listen to, and who do you respect in the rap game today?

I listen to all types of artists, no one in particular.

What projects have you had out in the past?

My first commercial mixtape was released a few months back, DJ Woogie of Shadyville/SODMG Presents: SK – The Warm Up mix.

We had a very impressive turnaround it ended up being downloaded globally and is still doing a lot of downloads each week.

What are you working on now?

The “Follow Up” Mixtape with DJ Woogie will be released in early February

If you could work with anybody in the game, who would it be and why?

A large record label, that’s who I wanna work with.

Ben Jacobs Interview

August 12, 2009

Ben Jacobs is connected! He’s built a buzz in his hometown of Delaware and is also affiliated with the Philly scene! We catch up with him to talk about his partnership with Tone Trump, his mixtapes and his EP.

Ben Jacobs, you’re from Delaware, tell us about how you got started rapping!

How I got started was on a whim 6 yrs ago. My homie and fellow artist Raveon invited me to a studio session. A lot of cats had come together to create a compilation mixtape. One of the producers hit me with a beat, I hopped on it and that sparked the fire. But as of 2 years ago i became serious with the music. I started networking crazy and pushing as much hot material as possible.

The scene in Delaware and Philly is a steadily growing one, who is making the most noise out there?

Besides me, I would say the big homie out of Delaware ‘Fred Knuxx’ he has Delaware on his back. Out of Philly? I am cool with a lot of artists but I must say ‘Tone Trump’. Trump has flooded the scene like an epidemic. Also out of new jersey ‘Jai Dove’ he doesn’t play when it comes to his craft. Everyone i named I’m affiliated with.

What would you say the difference in Delaware hip hop is compared to other area codes?

Although a lot of artists are influenced in my area by outside artists we are untouched, untamed, and all the way original. We can bring a spin to the music industry. Mainly every other artist has some what of a lead on us. The reason why is because they can say I’m from New York, Philly, ATL, Jersey and other cities and states. Mainly every hot artist in the game now are from those areas. We don’t have that backing, so we are highly independent. We have a lot to prove especially since we do everything ourselves.

You’ve got some diverse influences, from the lyrical Joe Budden to the commercial G Unit family. Do you think it’s important to have a number of different styles?

Honestly I think my definition of influence is to become better at my craft. I don’t agree with listening to other artists to influence your flow. My style is me because what i do is just ride the beat and make sure i keep my listeners interested and entertained and to be thought provoking when the time comes on the right track.

You’ve worked with up and comer Tone Trump, how did that happen?

Honestly he’s like a big brother to me. We met along time ago and we’ve rolled out through clubs and studios together. We hit it off, and we stay in touch from time to time.

Who else have you collaborated with?

Mike Knox (G Unit Philly), Two Five, Kaiser Sose, Lil Wayne, Young Capo, Exclusive, and many others.

Do you have any projects out already, and where can we get them from?

I actually have two mixtape projects available.

‘The Punisha’ with DJ Woogie and Shadyville DJs
And
‘The Fear Projects, with DJ Rated R, DJ Diggs, Evil Empire, and Supa Mario.
Available for listening on datpiff.com

Also my singles ‘Hundreds’ and ‘No Competition’ Feat Lil Wayne available on itunes, limewire store, napster, verizon, amazonmp3.com, cricket, jamster, and more.

What are you working on right now?

I’m working on my EP named ‘Black Curtain Premier’.
The title symbolizes an exclusive preview screener of me as an artist. This EP will definitely be a breath of fresh air. Music exclusively produced by a very talented producer named “Vikedin”. The features are undecided at this point but all it’s about is Ben Jacobs. I want people to know me and my talent.
