We catch up with rising producer, Nfinit3
So, how did you first start producing?
I was in college, I guess about 2001 or 2002. I was studying graphic design. Drawing and design had always been my passion up until my homie introduced me to the Justus League and 9th Wonder. When I found out 9th was only using the p.c. and a few programs to create his art, I set out to achieve a similar soulful sound with my own twist/touch on it. 8 years have passed and I think I found my place and calling with these beats.
Who were your inspirations back in the day when you first started?
I never really paid too much attention to producers outside of Preemo and Jazzy Jeff back in the day. Once I discovered 9th, it made me study other producers a bit more. So I looked at the work of Kanye, Pete Rock, Just Blaze and of course J Dilla who’s probably become my biggest inspiration on this journey.
Which producers do you like and admire now?
I still listen to 9th Wonder a lot. Black Milk and Oddisee have grown on me a lot over the past few years. Am I allowed to mention myself, I’ve grown to be a huge fan of my own work the more time has passed.
If you could choose any rapper to vocal your beats, who would it be and why?
I will answer the “why” part first, I choose this group of emcees because I’m a fan of their work and they’re still relevant/hot in my opinion. Not to mention as far as the industry goes, they know what its like to be where I am right now and they’re also where I want to be in the near future. With that said, I would love to work with Sean Price, Skyzoo, Murs, Jean Grae, Royce da 5′9, Phonte and Wale.
Who have you worked with, and where can we hear the tracks?
I’ve worked with Big T of Southernboi Ent, Phocuz (an affiliate of 9th Wonder and the Justus League), Bucky Dolla and K-Beta both from the DMV area, singer/emcee Range da Messenga, P. Genz from New Jersey just to name a few. You can find links of all the artists I’ve worked with on my website: http://nfinit3.com on the links page. There is music on the website as well as on the artists’ myspace pages.
What do you use to produce? Instruments or software?
I’ve always been a p.c. producer. From day 1 I’ve used nothing but Cool Edit 2.0 and Fruity Loops 4, I still use the same versions of each program. I don’t see a need in moving on to newer versions when I’m still learning new stuff from the ones I have. Its like perfecting a craft. I did, however, purchase a Macbook Pro recently and have been attempting to learn Recycle, Reason and Logic but that may take some time. As far as instruments go, I’ve recently opened up to allowing musicians play on my beats or intertwining their art(s) with mine. We shall see what those results are sometime in the near future.
Will you ever do, or have you already done, a whole album of work, like Timbaland or Jake One have done?
I’ve done the mixtape, the instrumental project, even experimented with a full project of me rapping over my own production. I’ve produced two full length albums for Bucky Dolla as well as contributed beats to other folks albums and mixtapes. As far as a whole album of my own work with a variety of artists, I will just say its on the way. I’ve been working on my official debut, Make Music, for like 3 years now. I can’t tell you that its going to have any high profile artists or that theres going to be any known underground names on it, but I can promise you it will be full of soulful, good music. Not having a deal, the support from a label or financial support for such a project definitely puts a damper on how you create and present it but I’m doing the best with what I have. Its different, but its good, really good.
Where do you want to be in five years?
I just hope to be living and successful man. If it isn’t music, maybe it’ll be with my art and design, if it isn’t with art then maybe it’ll be with my writing. I just hope the world gets the chance to hear me out. I’ve always felt like I had a lot to offer in many forms so if I can share the things I love to do with the world and manage to live comfortably then thats just fine with me. I’m not out to be a “baller” or have a 10 minute slot on MTV cribs. I’m happy with doing what I do and having the bills paid.
Where can we get in touch with you online?
I’m everywhere online. I’ll just drop the links and let you all go from there. http://myspace.com/nfinit3, http://facebook.com/nfinit3, http://reverbnation.com/nfinit3, http://youtube.com/Nfinit3Music. Of course, you can always email me at nfinit3beats@gmail.com. Just google me huh.
Do you have any shout outs or last words?
As always I want to thank God for allowing me to live and lead this life, and for giving me this opportunity to share my words and music with the world. I’d also like to thank you all for taking time out to interview me. Bigups to the whole DMV area, my family and friends…and to everyone in this hectic industry pushing through the struggle…make the most of your 2010. pCe!
